I ve used this app for several years and I don t know what I would do without it It woudl require me to go to tedious terminal commnds or lengthy playing around with other less helpful apps The developers seem to have thought out all the possible needs for renaming The advanced feature and ability to produce a series of steps makes it virtually perfect for any need I use this for a my website files extensive photo files and graphics projects as well as my documents Many users don t realize the power of having good files names It isn t just immediately convenient for viewing but it amps up the power of Spotlight searches or any other find utlitites And it contributes to my mental health                     As good as a utiliy gets Padupple

I ve tried multiple different file rename utilities and this has been the one to outlast them all It has good help a great way to see the changes before you make them and the ability to do very complex rename options by using multiple steps and if you re feeling frisky you can use regular expressions It solves the easy as well as the complex renaming tasks Highly recommended Make sure to save your multiple step tasks to a preset to make your life even easier                     This Tool Rocks WeezAir

Following is my original 5 star rating But the app has totally ceased to function since el Capitan and still does not work now May of 2016 So after 30 years I ve moved from Windows to Apple The prospects of Windows 8 plus my last two years experience with iPhones drove me to it But my new Macbook Pro won t show me date taken or a lot of other Exif metadata from my thousands of photos and it does not allow me to easily rename batches of photos I have filed my photos by date taken subject id for ages What can I do Thankfully I found Better Rename v 9 It does it all exactly the way I need it quickly and easily Okay if you are an OSx newbie like me there were a few problems Nothing worked Select 500 photos in a folder set up the app to rename them and BAM I am asked to re enter my administrator usesr password for each and every one of the photos This is Mavericks doing this not the app So I close the app and go to the folder level unlock it change the permissions to let everyone read and write and tell it to apply this to enclosed items Doesn t work Tried selecting all the photos and changing their permissions ala Windows Won t let me Won t let me unlock them without entering my password for each one Finally I found that while Mavericks doesn t tell me its doing it it was apparently making the changes I selected silently and secretly in the background Once I found that Mavericks may be doing things slowly and without telling me I realized that Better Rename was doing exactly what it claims to do and doing it well I have now changed thousands of names with no further problems and have no worries about the thousands left to do Now I just have to find the right app to see ALL the Exif metadata and to change or delete it for pics I may want to make public There seem to be more faked apps in those categories than there are reliable ones But after many nights of working with my photos I find Better Rename to be just great     Now worthless Does not open at all in El Capitan CD Wyte

I am not sure why so many people are having issues I have not had any since I downloaded the app a couple years ago I am on OS X El capitan 10 11 4 and it works great The userface is very simple and easy to use The app is very quick at renaming the files as well I love this app                     Works Great with Photos Jieming

I ve been using Better File Rename since I can remember and has always been my prefered tool for bulk renaming This is one of a handful of Apps that I felt deserve 5 stars                     Best batch file tool I ve ever used JPoirx

I ve owned Better Rename for a couple of years now and it is totally worth the price The dev is a great guy and responsive to emails and the licensing is very fair I ve not had to pay for any upgrades you buy it you got it Period As far as functionality goes don t believe the other reviews stating that it s limited and so forth it has a bazillion built in options but if you ve got some esoteric thing and it s not already there then you can build it using Regular Expressions There are no limits that I ve run into on how many changes you can make to the file names You can change files to some name you want remove text add text re sequence just keep piling on the steps until you ve got what you want I ve renamed hundreds of thousands of files and it has never let me down The change to panel shows you what you re going to get in real time so you see the changes as you apply the various options which allows you get exactly what you need and the confidence that it s going to do what you want so you don t end up with a bunch of mis named files Check the other programs out buy the bundle with the Folder Machine and you can mass manipulate files and folders to your hearts content As far as I m concerned one of the best utilities I ve purchased Rob                     Great App If This Won t Do It It Can t Be Done Spanky1968

I ve been looking for a Mac version of the Windows program Advanced File Renamer and settled on this as it has most though not all of the functionality of that program Overall it works well and gives you plenty of options for batch renaming files In particular I use this program frequently to rename batches of digital photos to the date time taken for better sorting There are ways to accomplish this same task using Script Editor but I m not interested in the hassle so this program is nice as it makes the work easy Stil 20 seems a bit steep given that similar programs for Windows are free and have greater functionality                 Good but overpriced Sodbuster95

I often have to rename numerous files and this app makes it very easy The rules based approach is very flexible and provides all sorts of ways to rename files including changing a specifc location in a name wildcard replacements file numbering etc You can also specify the order the repalcements are performed so if for example you wanted to replace all X s in filenames but not any thet ar XY you can first replace XY with say ZZ then replace all teh X s then replace ZZ with XY I have been using this app through several versions and it just gets better in every incarnation well worth teh 20 if you need to do a lot of file renaming                     A must have app jlc, just jlc

I use this for renaming photos based on capture time and date This allows me to have multiple camera memory cards files all grouped in one folder therefore avoiding duplicate names                     great for photography nholloman

I can t sing the praises of this software enough I have tens of thousands of photos to wade through as I finally have begun to organize my archives and libraries Automator works but it is clunky at times With the built in presets tasks like renaming my photos to a simple date time format to make cataloging easier are stupid simple now I ve blown through a lot of repeatative drudgery quickly thanks to Better Renamer I m also a digital hoarder extraordinaire and my OCD makes me demand that all my movies and tv shows are named correctly when I have an entire series or seasons I use Better Renamer with IVL Pro to make absolutely sure that all my files are properly named and formatted so Apple TV or PLEX will recognize and play nicely with everything Better Renamer is what Automator should aspire to for ease of use If I could give more than five stars I d double them Kudos to the programmer                     Indispensible for retagging photos movies tv shows jerry7171

I use this app for business Because we have to maintain compatibility with older software for some of we cannot upgrade our OSX beyond 10 6 8 I bought this software last year and have used it without a problem It s wonderful But after another employee created issues that required us to do a clean install of OSX on this machine when I try to reinstall Better Finder Rename now it suddenly requires OSX 10 7 I can still use the trial that renames only 10 at a time so why does the full version need a higher OS version Won t let me install from the app store because of that Why the increase in system requirements         Why does BFR9 now require OSX 10 7 JakeARoonie

This is an outstanding product that does exactly what it was designed to do rename many many files very very quickly With its powerful regular expression engine there really are no limits to what you can do with Better Rename I just tossed a few hundred text files at it all of which had different methods in the file name for showing creation date Using the regex I standardized rearranged the date format in every single file name in a matter of seconds Even if you have no little exposure to regex Better Rename makes the process pretty seamless and gives you a preview of what will happen to the file names before you commit to the process Just a fantastic app                     Intuitive design and features ThomasJPR

I use this application mostly with my image files I have set up a few defaults to automatically pull information from the exif data and name my files correctly It really is powerful in all that it can do Fairly easy to use and just works I have only taken off a single star for a couple of things that don t take away from its abilities but are instead just some things that would make it perfect Let me hide the multistep drawer despite having multi steps Allow me to hide shrink the left side of the application Give me a place to just drag drop then click a button to rename Once I have my defaults set up I really don t need to see the window but I DO need to see the current name change to section I have noticed a fair amount of lagg when dragging files from a finder window to the application When I drag the files on top of the application the whole computer appears to slow down Retina MBP As soon as I let go it speeds right back up This is a great program if you need to perform some batch renaming It is part of my image sorting workflow Thanks                 Filled with features and amazingness Danny Hanes

After seeing all the low ratings I thought I needed to chime in I ve been using the application for a while now and found it to be very intuitive to use and extremely powerful I am trying to live a paperless life and just kicked DEVONThink to the curb and replaced it by a simple folder structure Renaming files to follow a certain pattern is really easy to do with this application especially if you need to do something that would take a long time to set up in Automator or would otherwise require command line tools using regular expressions Take for example a case where files are currently named BANK STATEMENT UBOC MM DD YYYY pdf and you d rather have them be named YYYY MM DD Statement UBOC pdf Using this app it s simple to do this using a combination of built in actions and the regular expression module to move the date into the desired format If you need to do this several hundred times you will appreciate what this app does for you and won t be whining about having spent 20 I am certainly not using the app to its full potential but am always amazed at what it can do if I need to use it Somebody mentioned that the tags renaming is not useful I would strongly disagree Every now and then I export images from my Lightroom library to share with family and friends I use Better Rename to rename the images according to a useful pattern rather than leaving them in the camera s own naming convention It s super cool that you can access EXIF information and make it part of the file s name The app does indeed crash every now and then so this is something the developers should be working on                     Really useful Kid Rock C

I ve used this app for years Sometimes in its free form they limit you to 10 and I ve bought it various times as well It saves me a lot of time 20 is a pretty trival amount Seems like many folks don t remember what software used to cost and now expect everything to be 99 cents or something I really don t understand the negative reviews This app is a utility and its worth the price even if you need it for only one big project                     This is a very useful App FlashInPan

Better Rename 9 is buggy It would be most useful for large numbers of files but that s exactly where it falls down If you feed it too many files at once it will get stuck in a loop where it tries to count up the items to rename but just keeps counting to infinity You are stuck waiting Worse the OK number of files varies wildly Sometimes upwards of 10k are fine sometimes it has to be lower You can t tell if it is going to fail until it counts all the way up I ve hit this bug across multiple OS versions multiple computers and multiple Better Rename versions The bug has been around since version 8 at least and remains unresolved despite the fact that it has been reported and that it has a major impact on the usability of the program The presence of a giant obvious bug like this for so long shakes my confidence that this program is actually renaming everything correctly Additionally the interface for saving reloading rename operations is clumsy and awkward Overall I gave it a 2 It works to rename files at least sometimes but it is frustrating and difficult to use due to a poor design and bugs         Ongoing bugs Aerst2

whenever I put files to be renamed it crashes I tried renaming 200 photos with numbers and it named them all out of order I can t believe I paid 21 to have it only make worse problems I would rather indivually rename my thousands of files     always crashing Catiiie

I ve been using the free demo of this program as needed for a number of years When once again I had occasion to rename standardize about 200 file names I finally got tired of the 10 file limit of the demo and decided to buy the full version I ve tried sveral other rename utilities and this one beats them hands down It is the easiest to use and has numerous options to do virtually any type of rename process you can think of From character or word find replace at the beginning middle or end of a file name to renumbering files to adding sequence numbers to adding text to the beginning middle or end of a file name to adding dates or MP3 tags it does it all easily I don t need it very often but when I DO need it it s a fabulous program that saves me hours of time tedium and boredom Don t leave home without it looking at the previous review Apparantly since his version 8 9 the ability to extract info from MP3 tags has been added                     None Better Mr. Wizard!
