Introducing Dr. Dobb s app for the iPad. With this app, software and application developers gain access to breaking news stories, exclusive commentary from Dr. Dobb s editorial team and bloggers, deep technical content, clean code, ...
I downloaded this in response after clicking a link to an article in Mobile Safari and seeing the popup which suggests the app I downloaded it bit there was no way to search for the original article and the design of the app is very blah I went back to the original web link to see if the popup would offer to open the article in the app but it doesnt        Thoughtless design no search no notification article open
Not all of the text and graphics display properly on my iPad 1 with iOS5 It looks like the normal text works fine but text that uses their code font doesnt display at all See for example the Oct 25 article on HTML5           Nice access to magazine but
crashes Doesnt know its already installed screen sized incorrectly How did this get approved     keeps wanting to reinstall itself
Crashes frequently        Crash
It looks like The crew at Dr Dobbs has created an iPad wrapper for their web content without considering whether that content renders on the iPad Try this recent article The secondary effects of automated testing by Michael Feathers as an example Another good example of working with Legacy Code        iPad app with content not viewable on the iPad nuf said
App crashes when you attempt to share an article via a social site ie Twitter or Facebook Like another reviewer mentioned its ironic that this app serves articles that promote best programming practices        Crashes
Images are tiny thumbnails that cannot be expanded No link to the full version of the story is provided Text size cannot be changed by pinch gestures        Almost unusable
App crashed repeatedly or prompted to install app Ironic this is an app that focuses on good programming practices     Crash course
Id love to love this app but it keeps crashing on my 1st generation iPad        Not good on iPad 1
Apart from the issues with distorted images mentioned by other reviewers I found that nonASCII characters like emdashes were stripped from the articles and links to other articles lead to an embedded web view not the article within the app itself There seems to be no advantage to the app compared to simply reading the website Is it a cliché to say we expect more from Dr Dobbs        Disappointing
