I came upon Human Japanese with some basic reading knowledge and a decent vocabulary I am very pleased with the format of the lessons but some of the quiz questions are worded in an awkward manner Overall I am pleased                     Very useful Fujikakes

This is the best intro I ve ever had to any language and I ve studied several It s quick and useful as a crash course in hiragana katakana grammar and culture but I suspect I could also go on from here to a more intensive study I don t think they dumbed it down to make it faster to learn I wish this app existed for every language I want to learn                     Incredibly useful and fun satsumabug

When I finally decided last April to buckle down and study Japanese seriously as in every day and without giving up after a month or two as I had several times before I armed myself with two things this app along with a flash card style app for practicing the syllabaries known as kana This app is an excellent way to make your way through the basic components of the language it has clear audio examples and word by word breakdowns of the sentences it demonstrates thorough chapter reviews and other helpful quizzes and most importantly a good mix of crucial grammatical concepts vocabulary and cultural info A few things to note the iPhone iPad and Mac versions of the apps are sold separately so if you want to use this on multiple platforms you ll need to pay for it This doesn t bother me because the cost of even three versions is still very reasonable for the amount of language learning you can get from it especially if you get the Basic Intermediate bundle As far as usage notes the rate at which new words get added in vocab chapters was a bit overwhelming at times which made those sections take me longer to work through Also I found that I needed to supplement my kana study with a dedicated kana tool Real Kana worked well for me I d say that while this covers a lot of great material which took me about 3 months to finish Human Japanese Intermediate includes some information that s pretty fundamental like the forms for verbs so I d definitely recommend using both levels to get a solid footing with basic Japanese On top of this I m finding it helpful to practice speaking writing with Japanese friends and to seek out as much practice material as possible Subtitled anime is a good source for listening and for reading I ve benefited from visual novels with a text grabber translator combo that separates the often punctuation free text and displays meanings for individual words Another good resource is Satori Reader from the creators of this app which provides Japanese articles with scalable difficulty and built in SRS based kanji training so it s clear that this team is committed to supporting learning beyond the basics that you ll find here which in turn make me want to support their efforts                     This is the Japanese learning tool you re looking for rockdisciple

This is one of the most remarkable pieces of software I have ever used for ANYTHING The lessons are grouped in a logical meaningful order and are written so well you really do feel like there is an actual tutor there with you I have been trying to learn Japanese for a few years and have tried several software packages but never really felt like I was progressing I would seemingly hit a dead end and then that would be it But with Human Japanese I have been able to progress and find myself practicing the things I ve learned when I m walking showering anytime I have a little time to myself One of the things I like best is that they take the time to explain lots of little things to you And it is done in a very straightforward non intimidating way and not a sterile boring fashion that would leave me unhappy with the explanation and still not understanding it Just about all the sounds are sampled so I know HOW to say these things and not just WHAT to say The quizzes are solid with good questions and in different styles I also love the idea of XPs and leveling up it adds a feeling of accomplishment that is quantifiable As with anything like this though I feel that there is always room for improvement While the chapters are well organized and structured sometimes there is too much material to be processed in a chapter A good example of this is Body and Health it should probably be two separate chapters Body and Health and the section on using desu as de should be pulled out completely and perhaps expanded into its own chapter or included elsewhere because it has nothing to do specifically with the chapter in which it was placed The reason I say this is there is no searchable index and when I wanted to review this topic specifically I could not find it I was surprised to find it buried in with Body and Health a few of the chapters are larger than they should be I feel Another item I would change would be to make it easier to get to the vocabulary quizzes I can re do all the chapter review quizzes easily from the menus but the vocabulary quizzes are not accessible this way I have to go to the first page of the next chapter then back up one page to access the vocab quizzes and as I am discovering I personally need more work with vocab than anything Sorry to include these in my review I just didn t see anyplace else I could leave the author some potentially helpful suggestions to improve the software In the end though I feel that I am getting as much from this app as I would from a university level course in Japanese I am nearly finished with this one and am about to graduate to the Intermediate course I hope someday that Brak Software creates an advanced level app to complete the set I am really enjoying myself learning Japanese this way and can t wait to go back to Japan to try out what I ve learned Thanks John and Mariko                     Five stars just a few suggestions though Catman 63

I think this is the best for making the joy of Japanese clear It has all the things that I wondered about clearly explained How to make the characters look good The quizzes are a bit easy except the matching games and numbers quizzes which are more open ended than the typical multiple choice quizzes The Japanese people I meet seem pleasantly surprised that I can pronounce the words and this is thanks to the fact that a native speaker will pronounce all the words for you as they are presented just click on it or perhaps it s mainly because the Japanese are just a pleasant and appreciative group to begin with Either way this is a nice app                     The Best Zaxxtunes

I have been using HJ for 3 years now has definitely been my preferred choice of learning even over my school classes No complaints on how this is taught Everything is told to you nothing will be hidden Things are explained as to why they are how they are That would be cool if there was more customization like a theme available but it s nothing that affects the learning However if you are someone who isn t good with only being able to read and hear by learning and take notes then this probably isn t for you If you enjoy learning by getting to read and write notes then this is perfect                     Have been using for 3 years ZeldaFeb

The price is great and the app is powerful with a lot of info inside If you re starting out this isn t a bad place to start though I d recommend getting started on kanji right away as well I love the wanikani site for that My only complaints about the app are that it takes as long as it does to teach you katakana and that multiple choice quizzes make it easy to think you re further along than perhaps you really are I ve been studying Japanese for about five months now and in addition to this I like the following tools Wanikani mentioned above iKnow app and subscription Genki textbook workbook and apps When I was learning hiragana and katakana I liked Tako s Japanese and also the two Kodansha workbooks with flashcards                     Five Stars for the Price gnome machine
