Sounds: The Pronunciation App

Very useful features I have used this chart on posterboard to carry around to classes for years Now I can take the iPad and a projector and actually make the ideas on the chart more speechcommunication connected The wide range of activities included have already made me think of many ways I can use this in class for quite a few tutorial and training sessions I did have trouble playing the audio files but it was the settings in my iPad I could hear audio from all apps but this one It wasnt the app It was a mute setting I had configured in the background MacMillan was very quick to send me direct and clear advice on adjusting the iPad back to its correct settings Except for email turn around time it took two minutes to correct The app functions fine One negative point is that my bidialectic nature doesnt agree with several of the vowel soundsymbol equivalencies in the word examples for North American English I can imagine someone using those pronunciations and being easily understood but I am not sold on the idea that those words are pronounced in that manner by the majority of native speakers So far this has only involved about 58 words in the supplied word examples There is a regular pattern to my disapproval so it might be my dialectic bias Overall thanks MacMillan              Very Useful Software Tool

People always used to say to me that my vocabulary was great and so my writting skills and my gramma but they alway complaind about the same problem they told me that I could not grasp the difference in sounds like sheep and ship or cod and cord etc Ive been using this app for about two months and beliveme it really helps a lot I am quite happy with my purchase for this app has done what books coul not improve my pronounciation tenfold to the point that all my acquaintances have noticed my improvement This app uses the international phonetic simbols not the words written as they soud which might be OK for those who already speak english and are not interested in learning other languages beside their own Learning the international phonetic simbols will help you grasp the sounds of English the real sound and not an approximation as with the American system of writing words as they sound I really need to stress that up no matter if your first languague is French Italian German or Spanish Also it will help you later in life if you are trying to learn other languages I am currently learning French and knowing this symbols helps me a lot when using the diccionary I only had to learnt a few new sounds So try the free version if you have doubts and you will see in less than a month that it really works Just some suggestions to the developers 1 add more words once in a while so we dont get bore with the same words 2 One should be able to choose the target sound for the recording section just as in the practice section Thanks                 Perfect for students of English as a foreing language

This app is good it helped me a lot throughout my Phonetics course My only concern is that it should have the complete IPA with the place and manner or articulation           Good but

Very standard IPA but lacks other fundamental figures Helps with practice and a great introduction to IPA I wish its dictionary would expand           Pretty good with some errors

Its only been 20 minutes since I started using it and I have identified and corrected so many issues with my pronunciation already I wish I had this app earlier You can download the free version to try before buying this one This app is more useful for those who are familiar with the phonetics It may not be as effective for the others                 Exactly what I wanted Worth every penny

I normally dont write reviews but I want people to know that if they are thinking that they want to learn phonetics with this that this app doesnt have the complete IPA Its also missing the symbols for the stressed tt and the unstressed tt Its also not correct with the e symbol entirely If they could correct this app then I will change it to 5 stars           Good but

My fault perhaps being swayed by good reviews and the brand Never imagined it was restricted to a phonetic system I was reading and writing US English at college level when I was 10 I was looking for help was scientific terms and other rareties so this app has been deleted     No standard keyboard so useless

Just got this and I see it will help me train me ear Notice some errors already that could confuse students The American T in word celebrity is transcribed as t which is the British pronunciation but the American should be d Also l is said la in the audio but it should be l with no vowel sound I will keep checking it out before giving it an overall rating iTunes makes me rate it so I will give it a medium for now           IPA practice OK some errors

I dont understand if you charging 599 you must get the app right Before releasing it to the public Fix the sound     The sound does not work on ipad2

I was reading a book in my kindle app for Ipad and it has its own dictionary So I was planning to buy a dictionary with sounds but they are to heavy around 500 mega I found this app and I think it will help me a lot with the pronunciation while reading Hope it is updated from time to time with new words and features              Simple and helpful

Unfortunately this App stopped working with iOS 82 and 83 I tried to buy a new word list inapp purchase The new word list never downloaded or installed no matter how often I tried it I deleted the app and reinstalled it Now it doesnt even load the buy word lists section any more Just a spinning wheel Apart from that the app crashes every time when Im connected to a mobile network 4G One has to go into flight mode or be connected to a wifi for it to work No receiving phone calls when using the app Apparently the app tries to connect to a server at startup Once this fails it crashes Im in China and have tried to connect through 4G wifi using VPNs connected to different countries Doesnt work Very disappointed and no idea how to get my money back Avoid this software     Software is broken Dont buy

I bought this app after receiving an email from the maker saying that it cost 199 for 3 days only When I went to buy it on iTunes I noticed that iTunes listed it at the normal price I asked the maker about this and was reassured that it was discounted I was charged the full amount Am waiting for response from the maker     so much for special deal

This app has a very specific purpose making the connection between phonemic transcriptions using the International Phonetic Alphabet and spelling and sound at the word level While it is great to see both American and British English included in one app the learner must accept that practice and quiz sections will only accept one transcription even if the word has variable pronunciation with alternate transcriptions The central pronunciation chart has a few technical flaws but is still quite usable once you get used to it This could be a useful tool for the student of phonetics and phonology seeking practice with transcription As a pronunciation training tool it is less promising due its lack of description of articulatory features and being limited to single word utterances See the full posting on the blog Todays English in the World DJ Kaiser PhD        More a Transcription App than a Pronunciation App

Excellent application simple to use brings the user back to the basics and allows for practice Several items Ive yet to find if it is indeed part of the App and that is a growing slaughter of the English language along with grammatical absurdities such as fir in place of for then there is vocalization of the comma such as blah blah and ah blah blah and ah Well I think you get the picture or the sound of as it were I would like additional Apps in the different language also the ability of adding to the vocabulary list I was disappointed when aluminum was not found in British list Other wise quite excellent                 DustOff30

One if the selling points of this app is that you can PRACTICE learning writing and reading IPA Unfortunately the IPA keyboard does not work and several of the activities cannot even be accessed or performed because of this glitch Until then I recommend a good linguistics teacher and staying away from this corporate textbook affiliated app     Needs a Major Update

As an undergraduate linguistics major I was looking for an app to help me practice my transcription skills After trying other cheaper apps I tried the free version of Sounds I finally found what I was looking for Firstly what would seem natural to anyone developing an app like this isnt Support for both American and British English The other apps I bought didnt mention that they only supported British English so I ended up wasting my money This isnt the case with Sounds as it supports both Secondly I love the design of the app The more popular iOS devices become the uglier apps seem to get Not here I havent tried the quiz or practice parts of this app but I was so excited to find something that really fit my nerds I just had to write this review Highly recommended                 Fantastic Resource

Its ridiculous that it cost 6 and no iPhone 5 Support it would be really helpful if they support the iPhone 5 and more vocabulary              Needs Iphone 5 support

Great app but I want landscape position support in the paid version This is a disappointment as the free version supports it but the paid one doesnt I will give five stars when landscape is supported              Why no landscape mode
