I am just learning to use this It is pretty standard as far as time based speed guns radar gun is a misnomer for something like this as no radar is involved One starts the timer at ball release and stops it once the ball is caught The time of travel and distance traveled are used to calculate speed but you knew that right The ability to vary distances makes it more accurate than those that just use preset distances Also one can push down to start the timer and release to stop it This makes timing easier to me I am still however trying to get the hang of it I am debating whether to try the app that uses the phones camera to figure out velocity There are a number of precise variables in using that one Good enough app Radar gun
