Folder comparison for the rest of us: simple, fast and accurate. Compare at a glance two folders, even with thousands of files, taking into account file and subfolders content, creation & modification dates, permissions and more. ...
One extra star for a cool simple app in theory It sure would beat scrolling through the results of a diff qr It was working and I clicked on the little arrow to open a file location in the Finder The app hung I forced quit the app then tried to restart it Now it hangs at start up UPDATE Okay I ll chalk all that up to the flaky unsupported writeable NTFS driver But now the app starts up but refuses to look at anything for me It s as though it restarts or continues the last failing scan every time it s restarted I can t keep rebooting my laptop every time I need to run the app That s the reason I switched from Windows             UPDATED Troubling UX JREmrys
Thanks to the developer for making this utility available for free It provides fast and easy to understand results of differing files and folders I do wish that the app would allow the folders to be set via drag and drop instead of needing to select them via dialog boxes             user interface would benefit from drag and drop support QuiveringFungus
Generally I ve been happy with this app It is the best one in the App Store for what it does But with the new update and High Sierra it freezes when I go to choose the second folder I hope this is fixed soon                 Freezing Garfinkel
Program looks ok at first Compared some fodlers and there where MANY files that clearly showed missing on one side and existing on the right side but when I manaully go to both folders and verify each time in fact they BOTH DO HAVE THE SAME FILES and the program for some reason can t see any of the files in certain folders on the one side Also I had many Red in the list where the Creation Date was highlighted Red yet both the creation dates on all the files in question where EXACTLY THE SAME TO THE SECOND Good idea considering most time spend comapring folders resulted in hunting down problems that weren t even there becuase of the wrong reporting means this program is literally a waste of time     VERY Inaccurate SlavianNL
I added two folders and the little indicator bar indicated it was working and two hours later nothing had happened I would not say it worked poorly I would say it did not work at all     Try someting else Eljins
Since the app was first released in the reviews users have asked for a key legend so they know what they are looking at I would suggest a little bit of instruction or an FAQ would be nice too I set up a comparison on a very small folder just to see how the program worked I put in a few duplicates where a file had been modified slightly or the dates were different But most of the files were totally unique The app produced two separate lists with blank spaces on the corresponding line from the other side I would think red meant stop green was go and amber was proceed with caution or something of that nature yet all but one file was highlighted in red and only one of the documents I knew to be a duplicate was amber So what does that mean exactly And to think they have been updating this app for the past three years with the most recent just 30 days ago I guess the old adage still stands true you get what you pay for I would have been happy to pay for the app or make a donation to the developer for his her hard work and maintenance all these years Not this time though Frustration trumps donation and no I did not mean POTUS     You cannot leave 0 stars SofiaNYC
To find which files or folders are different you have to use keyboard arrows to go from one file to the next one at a time what is the point of even downloading this app if it can t compare entire folders     Useless wjatevrr
With no help files no color code information who can tell what this app is actually doing A quick little help file documenting what the checkboxes do and what the color codes mean would make a worls of difference and probably wouldn t tale 5 minutes Very disappointing             Who Knows if this program actually works rickhartmanii
The application works fine and truth be told saved me a lot of headaches My problem with it is there is no good documentation for it and worse yet as far as I can tell there is no way to copy move the files with in the program Each file must be individually selected thats right no shift of commend selecting located and dragged over If there were checkboxes the ability to select multiple items at once and a sync button this program would truly live up to it s potential and be a 5 star app             Meh Rarebitfnd
This is an outstanding free app for comparing the contents of directories especially those with many files and subdirectories I wanted something to compare my music files to my backups and in about 2 seconds it highlighted all files from the before and after folders that I selected Those directories include more than 8 000 folders and files with almost 60GB of contents Simple to use with options to only display changed files folders rather than all files folders with those changed highlighted in other colors I rarely take the time to write a review but I felt that this app deserved one because it completely met my needs and so exceeded my expectations                     Love it I don t understand the low reviews 2009Versys
Thanks you this worked a treat and it takes very little space under 900 KB I say bah humbug to the 1 star reviews It s free I m on version 1 1 8                     Well Done fels326
I recently downloaded this app and it has worked great until I decided to purchase the 4 99 file checksums feature When I try to run this feature on larger folders it doesn t work I keep waiting and waiting but it is just stuck on the thinking part I m very disappointed because I am testing this feature on some of my smallest folders so since I m having this issue now there s no chance that it will work will my larger folders Waste of 4 99     File Checksums Purchase Freezes Sjp0967
No instructions nothing happens Open ap select folders to compare I know one is missing 2 items out of 4 000 then Compare button is greyed out and nothiing happens No lists of files no progress bar no hint of what I might have done wrong nothing     Disappointing jjandk
I want an application to compare two folders with hundreds of items The folders had the same items except for one file I could not locate This application located the extra file in about 5 seconds Just what I was looking for Thank you Pierre Olivier Latour                     Did just what I wanted it to do TextExpander fan
local disk 411Gb and a NAS mounted as AFP in sync this app reports some of the files on the NAS as size 0 When browse and check the file is perfectly fine about 10 of the files are reported this way     it is not doing the job Aurel cara
In a comparison is there a way to exclude items that only have a different Resource size I am able to open and use files that have different Reesource sizes without seeing a difference So I don t think it affects the files really But when I do copies there are MANY instances of it How can I exclude these from a comparison                 Resource size Danrobd
This app is exactly what I was looking for a fast efficient visual way to confirm that two file folder contained identical content Thank you for making this wonderful FREE tool                     Does exactly what you need it to do Easy to use DM Tayag
Works fast and shows you if two files are different but doesn t show the actual differences which makes this useless for my purpose of comparing two code files for changes I bought the Checksum upgrade hoping that would unlock the ability to see the differences between compared files but I wasn t able to find any such feature Bummer Good thing I found DiffMerge a tool that does exactly this and it s free     Not useful can t compare actual content changes Mattycass
Thank you for this application saves me so much time Trying to compare folders with large video files is so easy with this app I really like how detailed this app is with all the controls It makes my work so much easier and gives me the confidence to delete duplicates and find missing files                     Thank you for this application saves me so much time someiphoneuser5
Blazing fast MD5 checksum comparison of files Can t ask for more in that department However if I m comparing two directories with 50 000 files inside each if there is an MD5 mismatch I would have to scrub through the entire list to find it There s no way to filter by mismatch If anything the mistmatches should be at the top of the results so that we know which files to recopy Hopefully Pierre will address this soon                 Good but with one glaring flaw Integr8d
Very weak folder comparison tool Not worth the money While It does the compare adequately you cannot do anything with results There are free solutions which are far superior     Weak at best GB01K
An effective tool for simple to moderate comparison of files folders with directories or even across an entire drive I have not purchased the checksum tool since that was not needed for the simple backup folders I was comparing Selection of comparison folders is simple and execution speed is based on the amount of info being compared There are simple exclusion toggles to show only the files folders you need such as excluding identical files A well written program and at the right price free                     Excellent simple compare tool TX Red Sox fan
Using the in app purchase menu I purchased the File Checksums add on feature The app store authenticated me and then charged my account the 4 99 The feature didn t activate in Compare Folders It still gives a link to learn more about the feature The screen shot in the app store shows the feature with a check box to use I ve tried the Restore Purchases menu in Compare Folders and it either doesn t do anything or displays an error trying to connect to the app store I ve purchased plenty of other apps on the app store with no problem Seems like a bug There doesn t seem to be a way to get my money back and the support link directs you to an issues page on the developer s github site I created an issue and will see if there is any response I ll update my review if the problem gets resolved UPDATE The developer responded to my support issue very quickly The solution I had to delete the app reboot and then reinstall the app That fixed the problem and the checksum feature was activated                 File Checksums problem UPDATE problem resolved NYC-Jay
I wanted to compare a folder with a backup NAS via either CIFS or AFP This program is unable to handle that When you try to open the remote folder it only allows you to select the top level share It won t let you select one of the folders in the share         Needs to do NAS disks Baulas
This application just saved me lots of trouble My primary OS X system boot drive became un bootable and I had to recover by booting from a backup drive that was made many months ago During the interval too long between backups I had upgraded and or installed a number of applications I was able to mount the unbootable drive and compare the applications folder on it to the applications folder from the backup system drive The Compare Folders application made it easy to identify the upgraded and new apps which I then copied from the un bootable drive to my current system drive In my case this included 69 applications Thank you for creating a very useful utility                     Very useful utility Thankful_1
This app coupled with OSX s built in FileMerge just saved me from a lot of head scratching and swearing I wish good things to the people behind this Thank you                     Just saved hours Evereign
I like the thoroughness of the application and it does exactly what is says I like the exclusions and I like that it uses checksums with the optional in app purchase What it REALLY needs though as far as an update to the user interface are a few basic features 1 It needs a Go button I do not want it automatically to start comparing when I change one side of the comparison 2 It needs a progress bar that actually shows something it does not show any progress from start to finish there is a token one but there is not even a duration running or a percent complete I had one drive take over 24 hours to compare and I had no idea where it was in its progress 3 There is NO SYNCRONIZE folders button or even EXPORT to text When I compared even with all exclusions turned on it was still an overwhelming list of differences I could DO NOTHING with other than scroll and go ok no what 4 It needs hide individual files something different than the existing exclude files does and just show a list of folders that its contents are out of sync being that it doesn t have a syncronize feature this would greatly assist in me manually getting them into sync             Lots of Promise but lacking a few basic User Interface features decrease usefulness crsouser
It s an excellent tool for comparing files and folders I wish that the last the select left folder and select right folder had their own last used list rather than sharing a single list This way I could I could move around one drive from the select left folder option and another drive from the right folder option without having to start at the root of the drives each time This is especially useful when making asymmetrical backups                 Excellent Program MJCH45
This applicaiton does a pretty good job of file comparison However if you are trying to merge files into a folder you will have to do that manually To assist that I would have liked this application to provide a print out The filters it provides can be quite handy when trying to just compare files with their creation dates or their modification dates but not both Checking on off the filter boxes e g exact match gives you a clue to the color coding of the lines Green means an exact match on one side of a scale while red means total difference no file name match on the other side of the scale Using this makes me want to be able to move copies of files folders from one side to the other so files folders are merged into one of the top level folders that are named from which comparison is made However this app does not provide an auto or semi auto sync capability The checksum provides another level of checking to determine file differences and just not date differences However oftentimes I have a date field in a word document that gets updated everytime I open the file so not only will the modification date get updated but so will the checksum change I paid for the checksum anyway to help promote the software but I am not sure how much use I will get out of it For those of you wondering this did work with El Capitan 10 11 1 even though it was last updated in 2014 If you are verifying a backup copy such as by superduper I can see how this would be very useful             File Folder Comparison OK but no File Sync lie2me
Pretty useless w o the checksum comparison IAP no file diff option not even in paid     Checksum comparison IAP no file diff Josep Valls
I had to restore about 1TB of data from some backups to my boot drive and I used this app to compare the source and target folders and make sure everything was copied Overall it worked quickly and well I liked the option Exclude files so that it would compare only folders which was a much shorter list The downside was that apparently found that every file had permission differences between the version on the backup and the version on the boot drive This may result from how Mac OS treats these drives differently However using the Exclude items with only permission differences feature most of those false positives were eliminated I did not use the in app purchse for checksums Overall I was pleased with this app and it gave me confidence that my restores were correct and complete One minor quirk There are three buttons Select Left Folder Select Right Folder and Compare Again After I finished a comparison I wanted to select both a new left and right folder for another comparison I found that after I selected a new left folder the app started doing a comparison between the new left folder and the old right folder I had to click the little X button to stop it then select my new right folder This is a very minor annoyance but I think it would be better if the app did not start the comparison automatically and the last button could simply be Compare                 Worked well for me Brandenburg5
It shows you which files are different but that s it If I want to see what the differences are I am out of luck If I didn t know that the files were different I wouldn t be comparing them What I need to know is what is different and this app does not do that What s worse is that I bought the checksum feature thinking that it would permit me to see the actual differences That was 4 99 totally wasted I wish that I could get my money back on that Unfortunately that s now how it works and I m out the 4 99 Live and learn I guess I should have read the reviews before purchasing Oh well developer gets a latte on me Enjoy I m off to find something that does comparisons and actually shows the differences         Not very useful Usmaak
I needed a quick way of checking if all of my music files were on my NAS drive Since I make back ups of the NAS each night a quick check of the folders was all I needed I have over 2 TB of music stored on the NAS so obviously doing this manually was not possible I tried the Terminal diff command and got gobbly error messages I tried compare folders and instantly got the comparison I was looking for I was able to filter the folders that were irrelevant and got just what I needed Great little app and if you don t want checksum support it s free                     Checked NAS vs BUP Rodrigaj
I really like the look and feel of the app and also that it s hosted on GitHub Even with the basic file size based comparison i found it did not accurately report results For example on the left i chose a folder which has 2 folders with videos inside it on the right was the same root folder on another drive but with only 1 of the 2 subdirectories The window showed no differences i m sure it s just a simple bug that will be patched soon but i will use another application for mission critical work Best wishes to the team             Good for casual use not professional SirDap
It compares the size and last modified data and calls it a match or not match If you want to compare the content of the folders then you have to buy that feature Pretty useless 2 star 1 for writting a code second it has some utility not so useful In short it is an adverstise app for the real useful app         Not what is needed from this type of softwares prashant_pmt
Need to clearly identify the left and right drives Shows duplicate folders can t have duplicate folders I don t know why i m writing this It hasn t been updated in over a year and probably won t get updated         Needs improvements papaMiller
The user interface suffers from never quite being sure how to do it or if you ve succeeded at doing it I compared multiple folders on a couple of big USB drives and I think I proved to myself that they were equal The two panels line up the corresponding files in the folders under comparison I think if you don t see any red lines you re in good shape I wish there was an indicator that simply says Both folders are the same That s what you want to know at the high level I wish you could click something that says Go             It works I think emmgee53
It does pretty much exactly what I was looking for the capability to check if folders have the same contents or not without having to check item by item When I m looking at dozens of folders possibly hundreds of subfolders makes something that would otherwise be impractical to do practical However it would be great if the UI made it clearer what files are within each folder like in Finder possibly with the indentation and some sort of explanation help tips for what the different colors mean                 Useful fantastic for free Ziefren
Compare Folders is fast has a simple easy to understand user interface and many useful filters It is nice that these filters can be invoked after the fact you don t have to re run the comparison I looked into this as a tool for checking whether a Migration Assitant transfer was completely successful after one of our Mac User Group members had some files missing after migrating to a new computer I tested the concept by comparing my User folder 289GB 270 000 files on my Mac with with the same folder on a week old SuperDuper backup on an external hard drive Compare Folders took about 3 minutes to complete this task using just size and modification date as criteria I also made sure that it treated Packages like iTunes and iPhoto databases properly i e compared items down to the level of the individual songs and photos I haven t yet tested it to compare old computer and new computer files after a Migration Assistant transfer but I am quite confident that it will work                     A useful easy to use gem oregonpete
this is a nice free tool on the App store it is fast and clean if you visually want to see a folder tree diff I love it                     Clean GUI and fast execution Yo Oblio
It does seem to have issues when comparing between two different machines aceoss a LAN It s also a real pain when doing successive compares such as comparing a 2004 archive and then a 2005 archive This is because as soon as you pick a sopurce for a folder it starts comparing without giving you a chance to select the source for the right folder It can take 5 minutes on large file systems to traverse the tree so you wait 5 minutes just to be able to specify the correct other folder That is it is very difficult to chage BOTH folders before comparing again For smaller folders and file systems it seems to be great But we have a lot of folders to compare and it s UI is a pain because we can t set the eft and right and then tell it to start and you CANNOT interrupt or stop it once it starts you just wait the 5 minutes for it to finish comparing the wrong two olders By the ay there is NOT identification of the developer no developer phone or email or web site They do link to a forum that looks like it has been a year without many updates It does make me wonder             Good but not entirely trustworthy Gentle Explorer
I d expect to use a tool like this to check if files in two folders are different or missing And this sortof works provided the missing item s are only in the left folder But it s a one way operation anything missing in the right folder won t show up in either list You ve got to run the diff twice with each folder taking turns in the left and right spots And since there s no swap left and right button and no drag drop support it s a bit laborious to do this         Decent start but major flaw TheDelayFish
Excellent free app I am going to download the checksum app to use on those rare occasions I need a mission critical copy like my photo library But for day to day file moving this is an awesome free app                     Great way to double check when moving files from drive to drive 4th of 4
For a free app this is great Actually I bought the checksum feature not that I needed it but mainly to support the devloper For what I needed to use it at the time it met my needs I then started to think what would make this app even better and here s a short list Drag and drop folders onto the icon or window so I wouldn t have to manually select them with the file chooser Command line wrapper to launch the application passing in the directories to compare such as cf dir1 dir Option to show in hierarchy directory structure like the list view in Finder I would gladly pay for these features Once again nice job Looking forward to future updates                     Nice Job I d pay for a couple bells and whistles I am Jedi
