SGMPlants is a highly detailed interactive field guide to plants of the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles, California. Based on an interactive CDROM from Cliff and Gabi McLean of Nature At Hand, this large app--over ...
This is the second flower guide I have from Earthrover This one doesnt dissapoint Like the other the search choices here are extensive And unlike books I refer to I can search leaf structure if the plant isnt in bloom Easy to just casually search through the photos to find the color and look of a flower seen on the trail to find its name Or click on the details tab and find a great deal of information If you want to dig deeper and explore botanical terms become versed in the Latin organization of plant families or want information on plant uses its all there a reference and an education in your pocket There are 56 photos for nearly each species This and a hand lens will go on my next hike No more heavy guide books                 Perfect guide for a pocket
I like this app and I used it on my iPhone on a recent hike There could be better descriptions of the plants or more pictures of them I originally downloaded the app on my iPad because the app says that it also works for iPad The resolution is not compatible with the iPad however and I can only use it I tiny screen mode I wish that this was made more clear in the description or that an iPad version will be available soon           Good resource but need to update iPad compatibility
Its nice to have a narrative for each species rather than just the technical plant key traits found in the Jepson Manual and the photos are helpful However a lot of the photos are useless since they dont offer enough detail and cant be zoomed in on the screen This has a lot of good info but after spending several sessions in it Im estimating it probably only has at most half of the species occurring in the San Gabriels Intermediate and advanced botanists will likely be disappointed Hopefully future updates will offer improvement           Great format good start
Going on a three day hike in the San Gabriel mountains Will test the app It would be very useful to know which plants are edible and what parts of the plants Also a cross reference between similar looking plants for example if Im looking at Chinese mustard plant in the wild to make sure its not something similarand poisonous the app provides 3 most similar looking plants to the mustard plant that I can look over and review              Great app
Everything theyre saying about this app is correct its very handy for taking into the field As good as it is though I think they could have broadened the number of plants considerably Im not seeing many subspecies to speak of and it seems like they are leaning towards the betterknown plants I like that you can search several ways including by color flower leaf etc this really is a fantastic source I just wish theyd update it with more information since we have so many overlapping plant zones in and around the San Gabriels              Very Handy Could be More Extensive
Cliff and Gabi McLean are renowned for their knowledge and expertise as plant experts for the San Gabriel mountain region I have their CD version of Plants of the San Gabriel Mountains and have wished that I could bring that with me in the field Now I can with this app Easy to use and chock full of information and images the search capabilities make plant identification in the field a snap No more wondering What is that plant or I think I know what that is I just need to confirm it somehow An awesome resource                 Just what Ive always wanted
